Coach: Steve Markie (14th year)

Last year: 10-11, Lost in first round of Class LL Tournament

Key losses: Stephanie Sales, Maura Skehan, Eileen Hogan, Kiersten Nunes.

Key returnees: Laura Salerni (sr. ss), Oliva Burgos (soph. p), Meg Florek (sr. cf), Brianna Woods (jr. if), Dana Gionfriddo (jr. 2b).

Outook: The Indians have an extra loss to overcome heading into the season having lost senior Kaylie Grenier to a knee injury. Salerni moves over from third after three years, but Burgos is back in the circle, which is a big boost for Newington. Woods was among the eam leaders in average and RBI last year, but will be asked to take on a greater role this year.

“It’s somewhat of a rebuilding year, having to replace key offensive players and experience,” Markie said.

Still, the Indians can win 10 games again this year if some of the young talent steps up and they survive a tough early schedule.
