Newington

Coach: Steve Markie (16th season)

Last year: 13-7 (lost in second round of Class LL)

Key Losses: Dana Gionfriddo (second base.), Brianna Woods (third base) and Alyssa Frohock (left field)

Key returnees: Olivia Burgos (pitcher), Katrina Peck (catcher), Kennedy Sullivan (centerfield), Alyssa Bellizzi (first base) and Haley Blais (shortstop)

Key newcomer: Lindsey Mangiafico (outfield)

Outlook: The Indians are looking to build off a 13-7 record and a trip to the second round of the Class LL tournament last year. They lost three key players but have plenty of experience returning.

Olivia Burgos, who was an All-State member last year and a three-time All-CCC member at pitcher, leads those who are returning. She is joined by Katrina Peck (catcher), Kennedy Sullivan (centerfield), Alyssa Bellizzi (first base) and Haley Blais (shortstop).

Also expected to have a good season is newcomer Lindsey Mangiafico in the outfield. The hope for Newington is to be in the top half of the CCC, and with those players returning it is certainly possible.

“Pitching (Burgos and Kat Lagace) will be the team’s biggest strength as well as team chemistry and experience,” Newington coach Steve Markie said. “If the team can find a way to score some runs behind Burgos they can improve upon last year’s record and possibly advance further in the state playoffs.”
