Softball opens with state tourament winWednesday, May 31, 2017 NEWINGTON - Kat Lagace continued her standout senior season as she led the Newington softball team to a win in its first-round game of the Class LL tournament against Enfield 6-1. The right-hander went the complete game and struck out nine batters while only giving up four hits and one run. The Indians had plenty of contributors on offense but Cyan Gonzalez and Rachel Thureson had the big hits. Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBI and Thureson tacked on a home run. Next up for No. 12 seed Newington is a road date with fifth-seeded Stamford, who has lost just two games all season, today. “Stamford is a pretty good team,” Newington head coach Steve Markie said. “They pretty much have an all-state starting pitcher so it should be a good game.”
